Autism Spectrum Disorder: Similarities, Differences, and the Limits of Comparison

Introduction

Among all the psychological constructs considered in this thesis, none bears greater resemblance to the experiences commonly described by self-identified overthinkers than Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), particularly what was historically referred to as Asperger syndrome.

Individuals describing themselves as chronic overthinkers often report behaviors that appear strikingly familiar within autism literature:

  • prolonged pauses before responding,

  • literal interpretation of language,

  • preference for accuracy over speed,

  • intense interests,

  • social fatigue,

  • discomfort with small talk,

  • extensive internal analysis,

  • exceptional pattern recognition,

  • frequent misunderstanding by others.

At first glance, these similarities may suggest that many overthinkers are simply undiagnosed autistic adults.

Such a conclusion, however, would be premature.

Scientific reasoning requires distinguishing observable behavior from underlying mechanism.

Two people may exhibit identical conversational pauses while arriving there through entirely different cognitive pathways.

Likewise, individuals sharing the same diagnosis may exhibit remarkably different patterns of communication.

The purpose of this chapter is therefore neither to argue that Socially Guarded Cognition (SGC) is autism nor to distance it unnecessarily from autism.

Instead, this chapter examines Autism Spectrum Disorder as one of the most important existing explanatory frameworks. It asks where the similarities are genuine, where meaningful differences emerge, and what lessons autism research contributes to understanding deliberate cognitive processing.


A Brief History of Autism

Modern understanding of autism has changed dramatically during the past century.

In 1943, psychiatrist Leo Kanner described children who demonstrated profound differences in social interaction, communication, and behavioral flexibility.

One year later, Austrian pediatrician Hans Asperger independently described another group of children whose characteristics differed considerably from Kanner's original observations.

These children often demonstrated:

  • average or above-average intelligence,

  • highly developed vocabularies,

  • specialized interests,

  • social awkwardness,

  • unusual conversational styles,

  • exceptional factual knowledge.

For decades, these descriptions evolved separately.

Eventually, the term Asperger syndrome entered psychiatric classification systems as a distinct diagnosis.

In 2013, publication of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) eliminated Asperger syndrome as an independent diagnosis.

Instead, autism became conceptualized as a spectrum, recognizing substantial variation in presentation rather than discrete categories.

Today, individuals formerly diagnosed with Asperger syndrome are generally included within Autism Spectrum Disorder, often informally described as requiring relatively low levels of daily support.

This historical evolution reflects an important scientific lesson.

Psychological classification systems are not fixed truths.

They change as evidence accumulates.


Autism as a Spectrum

The word spectrum is frequently misunderstood.

It does not imply that every individual lies somewhere on a single line between "not autistic" and "very autistic."

Rather, autism involves multiple dimensions that vary independently.

Individuals differ in:

  • language abilities,

  • sensory processing,

  • executive functioning,

  • social communication,

  • repetitive behaviors,

  • flexibility,

  • adaptive functioning,

  • emotional regulation.

Two autistic individuals may share surprisingly few outward characteristics.

One may be highly verbal.

Another may speak very little.

One may thrive in structured environments.

Another may struggle despite similar intellectual ability.

This diversity cautions against simplistic comparisons.

If autism itself is highly variable, overlap with another proposed construct must be examined carefully.


Core Diagnostic Characteristics

Current diagnostic criteria emphasize two broad domains.

The first involves persistent differences in social communication and social interaction.

These may include difficulties with:

  • reciprocal conversation,

  • interpreting nonverbal communication,

  • developing or maintaining relationships,

  • adjusting communication across different social contexts.

The second domain involves restricted or repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, or activities.

These may include:

  • repetitive movements,

  • insistence on routines,

  • highly focused interests,

  • unusual sensory responses,

  • repetitive language,

  • resistance to change.

Importantly, diagnosis requires that these characteristics originate during early development and produce clinically significant impairment in daily functioning.

Possessing isolated autistic-like traits does not, by itself, establish Autism Spectrum Disorder.

This distinction becomes particularly important when comparing SGC with autism.


Areas of Genuine Overlap

Several characteristics repeatedly appear both in autism literature and in descriptions offered by individuals identifying as chronic overthinkers.

These similarities deserve careful attention.

Literal Language

Many autistic individuals demonstrate a preference for precise language.

Ambiguous wording may produce uncertainty because multiple interpretations appear equally plausible.

Similarly, many individuals describing socially guarded cognition report carefully examining wording before answering.

In both cases, conversational pauses may increase.

The observable behavior appears similar.

Whether the underlying cognitive motivation is identical remains uncertain.


Pattern Recognition

Research has frequently associated autism with strong abilities in recognizing systems, regularities, and patterns.

Many overthinkers likewise describe continuously searching for relationships among ideas, behaviors, conversations, and social interactions.

Pattern recognition may contribute to extensive analysis because each new observation activates numerous previously stored associations.

Again, similarity does not necessarily imply identical mechanism.


Specialized Interests

Deep knowledge within selected domains frequently appears in autism research.

Many self-described overthinkers likewise develop extensive expertise regarding subjects they find intellectually rewarding.

These interests often become sources of enjoyment rather than social withdrawal.

The important question is not whether specialized interests exist.

It is whether the cognitive processes supporting them differ.


Social Fatigue

Extended social interaction requires continuous interpretation of rapidly changing information.

Many autistic individuals report becoming mentally exhausted after prolonged social engagement.

Individuals describing SGC often report similar fatigue, particularly during group conversations requiring rapid responses.

Whether this fatigue results from similar cognitive mechanisms remains an important research question.


Preference for Accuracy

Autistic individuals frequently report discomfort with ambiguity or imprecision.

Many overthinkers express similar concerns.

Accuracy often takes precedence over conversational efficiency.

This preference may contribute to response delays because additional verification occurs before speaking.

Such similarities represent one of the strongest areas of overlap between autism research and the proposed SGC framework.


Important Differences

Despite these overlaps, several important distinctions emerge.

Motivation

Many autistic individuals describe social communication differences arising naturally from neurodevelopmental variation.

Individuals describing SGC often emphasize something different.

Their delay appears motivated by deliberate evaluation.

They describe actively considering:

  • intent,

  • wording,

  • possible misunderstandings,

  • emotional consequences,

  • factual accuracy.

The distinction is subtle but important.

One explanation emphasizes differences in social communication.

The other emphasizes differences in cognitive strategy.


Flexibility

Many participants describing SGC report that response latency decreases substantially among trusted friends and family.

Conversation becomes easier.

Humor appears more naturally.

Responses become faster.

If conversational processing changes significantly with perceived social safety, this suggests situational flexibility.

Whether similar changes occur within autism varies considerably between individuals.

The degree of flexibility may therefore become an important variable for future study.


Primary Objective

Throughout interviews and personal observations described in this thesis, one recurring theme emerges.

Many thoughtful communicators are not primarily attempting to understand social rules.

They are attempting to produce the most accurate, complete, and appropriately nuanced response possible.

Their goal is not merely successful communication.

It is responsible communication.

This distinction may prove important.


Masking and Social Adaptation

Autism research has increasingly examined the phenomenon of masking.

Masking refers to consciously or unconsciously modifying one's natural behavior in order to appear more socially typical.

Examples include:

  • rehearsing conversation,

  • maintaining eye contact deliberately,

  • suppressing repetitive behaviors,

  • copying others' social behavior,

  • memorizing conversational rules.

Many individuals describing SGC likewise report modifying communication.

However, the purpose may differ.

Rather than masking identity, they often describe filtering responses to reduce misunderstanding or conflict.

Whether these represent different forms of the same adaptive process remains an open question.


The Risk of Misdiagnosis

One hypothesis motivating this thesis is that some thoughtful communicators may be misunderstood.

That misunderstanding may occur in several directions.

Some individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder may remain undiagnosed because their strengths compensate for social challenges.

Others may incorrectly attribute all thoughtful behavior to autism.

Still others may possess entirely different cognitive styles while displaying behaviors superficially resembling autistic traits.

This thesis does not seek to resolve diagnostic questions.

Rather, it seeks to encourage greater precision before assumptions are made.


Lessons from Autism Research

Regardless of whether Socially Guarded Cognition ultimately proves useful as a construct, autism research contributes several valuable insights.

First, outward behavior alone rarely reveals underlying cognition.

Second, strengths and challenges often coexist.

Third, communication differences frequently arise from interactions between individuals rather than deficiencies within one person alone.

Finally, neurodiversity research reminds us that variation in human cognition should not automatically be interpreted as pathology.

These lessons significantly influence the philosophical foundation of this thesis.


A Working Comparison

At this stage of the investigation, the relationship between Autism Spectrum Disorder and Socially Guarded Cognition may be summarized cautiously.

Autism provides a comprehensive developmental framework explaining social communication differences, restricted interests, and repetitive behaviors across the lifespan.

Socially Guarded Cognition, by contrast, proposes a narrower descriptive model centered upon deliberate conversational processing, social risk evaluation, and response construction.

Some autistic individuals may exhibit Socially Guarded Cognition.

Some individuals exhibiting SGC may not satisfy diagnostic criteria for autism.

Some may belong to both groups.

Some may belong to neither.

Determining these relationships requires empirical investigation rather than assumption.


Transition to the Next Chapter

Autism represents only one of several frameworks relevant to understanding thoughtful communication.

The next chapter turns to Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), another condition frequently associated with executive function, working memory, conversational timing, and internal cognitive complexity.

Although autism and ADHD are often discussed together, their underlying mechanisms differ substantially.

Examining those differences further clarifies whether Socially Guarded Cognition reflects a recognizable processing style or an intersection among several existing constructs.

This chapter has explored Autism Spectrum Disorder as one of the strongest existing explanations for many characteristics commonly attributed to chronic overthinking. While meaningful areas of overlap exist, important differences also emerge, particularly regarding motivation, flexibility, and the role of deliberate cognitive strategy.

The following questions guide the next stage of the investigation:

  1. To what extent can executive function and attentional regulation explain the cognitive processes described as Socially Guarded Cognition?

  2. How does ADHD influence conversational timing, response construction, and internal cognitive complexity?

  3. Which similarities between autism and socially guarded cognition reflect shared mechanisms, and which merely reflect similar outward behavior?

  4. Can deliberate conversational analysis occur independently of autism while still producing comparable social experiences?

  5. What combination of existing psychological constructs best explains the recurring pattern of extensive internal processing before communication?
